Introduction

Ychan is a furry image board. It supports a wide array of image and video formats and advanced features like image tagging and bookmarking.

History

Ychan was created in March 2008, drawing upon Yiffy International code libraries and features with influences from popular image board and forum concepts. Since coming online it has forked into three versions:

Advanced Features

Video Support

Ychan supports a wide array of video formats which can be replayed either via the flash-based Yplayer or your browser's default media player. You're even given the option to download the file instead of waste bandwidth playing it. See Supported Files for more information.

Duplicate Media Detection

While most image boards have traditionally served as temporary dumping grounds, Ychan aims to be an efficient, highly categorized and diverse archive. As such, threads and posts are not phased out or 'pruned' (deleted) and techniques such as Duplicate Media Detection are employed to reduce repeat posts and promote older threads. When a duplicate image or video has been detected the posting user is offered the choice to post a link and a thumbnail at the top of their message body to the old image, post the image anyway or "do nothing" which cancels the post and deletes the uploaded image.

Dual Extended Hashing

Dual Extended Hashing takes fingerprints of images using two different sets of metrics, making the accuracy of Ychan's duplicate media detection unparallelled and the Image Blocklist possible.

Optical Character Recognition

Ychan uses a custom OCR function to block images containing identifying watermarks from some sites which violate Ychan policy.

Image Blocklist

The Image Blocklist is a list of Dual Extended Hash fingerprints which will either block a user from posting an image which has been listed or ban them depending on what action a moderator has chosen for that image. This helps reduce policy violations and bans because once an offending image has been posted an exact copy of it can never be posted again. Conversely, common troll image macros are typically set to ban and this has helped increase the number of automated defence bans, both reducing the level of spam and the staff workload.

Real Time Black List

Every post sent to Ychan is checked against a minimum of 6 RBL servers to ensure the poster is not listed as an open proxy, spammer or other compromised host.
